Research Methods
(Undergraduate)
This course is designed to provide students with hands-on research experience. My intention is for students to experience life as a modern-day research scientist in a highly condensed format. They have the chance to build their skills and proficiency in all aspects of the research process—from reviewing and evaluating research to generating a research question, formulating and preregistering hypotheses, collecting, organizing, and analyzing data, preparing APA-style written reports of their findings, and communicating these results in the form of a conference-style poster and presentation. As a foundation of this course, we conduct a Collaborative Replication Education Project.
Course Objectives
Psychology is a research-based science. After completing this course, students will improve their understanding of the steps involved in applying the scientific method to human behavior and learn how to interpret scientific research in psychology. After completing this course, students will be better able to:
• Use scientific reasoning to interpret psychological phenomena.
• Demonstrate the ability to locate, evaluate, and effectively use psychological research.
• Interpret, design, and conduct basic psychological research.
• Appy ethical standards to evaluate psychological science.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the IRB process in research.
• Demonstrate skill in APA style writing.
• Demonstrate skill in the visual and oral presentation of information.
• Demonstrate project management skills.
